Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company is participating in the Challenge 2009 to demonstrate how MUOS, the next generation of DOD SATCOM, would enhance warfighter capabilities. To achieve this goal the team at Lockheed Martin SSC has developed a MUOS emulator that uses open spectrum frequencies (1922.4 ? 1927.4 MHz and 2112.4 ? 2117.4 MHz. As a result we need FCC to issue a Special Temporary Authorization to operate.

Please explain the purpose of operation:
To determine range and antenna beam pattern over water and in a representative urban environment in order to characterize expected MUOS performance. Purpose of the operation is to determine range and antenna beam pattern over water and in a representative urban environment in order to characterize expected MUOS performance. The test locations and coverage area are selected to simulate the environment at Trident Warrior 2009 and Empire Challenge 2009, two DoD experiments in which we will be employing this equipment. At these experiments we will be demonstrating to the US Navy and US Joint Forces Command the benefits of delivering 3G applications and services to the lowest echelons (ie to the individual warfighter). The specific applications and scenarios include Blue Force Tracking to reduce fratricide and assist Combat Search and Rescue, Biometrics Data Collection and Exploitation for distributed high value target search, force protection and security, and beyond line of sight tactical voice/data communication for improved situational awareness and air/ground coordination in both urban (eg, Baghdad) and mountainous (eg, Afghanistan) environments.
