Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
L-3 builds TT&C communications antennas. We have been experiencing high passive intermodulation (PIM) distortion which causes transmitter noise to bleed into the receive band. We would like to perform factory PIM testing at our location. We need to radiate a CW signal at 2120 MHz with the antenna pointed at zenith away from the GEO arc. We will measure the receive subsystem PIM level. The 6.3 MW ERP is a requirement for system-internal IM and interference testing. This testing is required before the antenna system is disassembled and shipped to the customer site. This power level will only be used for 5 minutes for each test, for a total of 6 tests. These 6 tests of 5 minutes each will be performed over a 3 week period. The ERP is high because this is a 13-meter dish, yet it will be pointed vertically, 90-degrees from the horizon. The half-power beam width will be only 0.73 degrees. We feel that the pointing direction, beam narrowness, band narrowness (CW), and the brief and limited transmission durations do not present an opportunity for perceived RF interference in the vicinity of the antenna.
